Rippled sycamore pen blank

Rippled sycamore, or curly sycamore, is often called fiddleback sycamore because it's the wood of choice for the backs of the best looking violins. It has medullary rays that radiate out perpendicular to the grain, which are enhanced in the finishing and polishing process to transform into a stand-out feature.

The examples in our photo have not been sanded or polished, and you can clearly see the medullary rays even without finishing.

Rippled sycamore will take a stain easily, which will further enhance the medullary rays, (which is what they do on a violin), or you can leave it plain, but in either case, the chatoyance will pop out once finished and you will have a striking pen.
